A few weeks ago Harcourts launched their Platinum ‘AR’ app that features exclusive property listings and 3D scans of the properties up for sale. Although the app isn’t strictly AR, it does scan an image target and take you to the property listing on the web, where you can view the Matterport scan of the property right on your phone – basically a panoramic virtual tour combined with a 3D model of the house.
We’ve been advocating the use of technology such as Matterport and its advantages, to promote properties for sale. You can save countless hours by viewing 3D scans, or if you live far away and can’t physically view the house, these tours enable you to get a very good idea of what the property is like. I’ve heard of people buying properties using these tours, without actually ever putting a foot on the property. It just makes sense to be able to quickly browse through all the listings, take the virtual tour of the ones you are interested in, and then contact the agent once you find something to your liking.
I’m still amazed at the poor quality of the listings on the major property platforms on the web, with shoddy and unprofessional photos. Hopefully with Harcourts and others taking steps to promote properties in this way, it will become standard practice in a few years. Once buyers get used to being able to take a virtual tour straight from their living rooms, there will be no going back to the old way of doing things.

Here is an example of a Matterport scan, which is a mixture of a 3D model and 360 degree panoramic images.
